How Does Emsculpt Tone Muscle?
Many non-invasive body shaping treatments address fat and skin. Emsculpt uses HIFEM® energy that passes through the skin to stimulate the muscle itself, causing repeated strong contractions.
Using High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy, BTL states that Emsculpt induces about 20,000 supramaximal contractions in a 30-minute session. In BTL's clinical data, treated areas showed increased muscle thickness and reduced fat thickness on average. Individual results vary.
Supramaximal Contractions
Induces intense muscle contractions that are difficult to reach through voluntary workouts.
Muscle and Fat Effects
In BTL's clinical data, treated areas showed muscle thickening and a reduction in fat thickness. It is not a weight-loss treatment.
Non-Invasive Buttock Toning
Used to tone and firm the buttock muscles without surgery or needles.
What Is HIFEM® Technology?
High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic energy interacts with motor neurons to trigger deep muscle contractions.
Energy that reaches the muscle
HIFEM energy passes through the skin and fat without needles or incisions and acts on the motor nerves of the muscle underneath.
Strong, repeated contractions
The muscle contracts many thousands of times in a 30-minute session, at an intensity that is hard to reach with voluntary exercise.
Muscle adaptation
The muscle adapts to this workload. Manufacturer studies also report changes in the fat layer over the treated muscle; individual results vary.
Change over weeks
Any change in tone develops over the weeks after a course of sessions, not straight after one visit.
Is Emsculpt Right for Me?
Emsculpt suits people who want to tone muscle without extensive exercise or surgery. It is not a weight-loss treatment.

Emsculpt Questions in Richmond, BC
Does Emsculpt hurt?+
Most people describe a strong, intense muscle contraction rather than sharp pain, a bit like a very hard workout, and intensity is adjusted to your tolerance. You lie down and relax during the session. Some people feel muscle soreness afterwards, like after exercise.
How many Emsculpt sessions do I need?+
The standard protocol is 4 sessions of about 30 minutes each, scheduled 2 to 3 days apart over about two weeks. Each treated area, such as the abdomen or buttocks, has its own session time. Your physician may adjust the plan to your goals, and maintenance sessions may be discussed after the course.
How much does Emsculpt cost in Richmond, BC?+
The cost depends on the areas treated and the number of sessions, usually a course of 4 per area. We do not list prices online. After a consultation with Dr. Jiang's team, we give you a quote for the full plan, so you know the total before you start.
How long do Emsculpt results last?+
Results are not permanent. Like any muscle, tone is maintained through regular activity and a healthy lifestyle, and it can fade without them. Maintenance sessions, often every 3 to 6 months, may be recommended depending on your goals.
Is Emsculpt a weight-loss treatment, and am I a good candidate?+
No, it is not a weight-loss treatment. It suits people close to their usual weight who want more muscle tone, such as the abdomen or buttocks. It is not for pregnancy, metal implants or pacemakers in the area, or hernias unless cleared by a physician.
Can I have Emsculpt after having a baby?+
Possibly. Emsculpt is not used during pregnancy, so wait until you have recovered from delivery and your doctor has cleared you for normal activity. Check with Dr. Jiang first about timing, breastfeeding and whether diastasis recti (abdominal separation) is present, as this affects whether and when it may be suitable.
How do I get to RAAC from Vancouver for Emsculpt?+
We are at Unit 110, 5580 No. 3 Rd, Richmond, BC, about a 3-minute walk from Lansdowne Station on the Canada Line, with building parking via Ackroyd Road. We are open daily 9:00-18:00, with consultations in English, Mandarin and Cantonese.
Can Emsculpt be combined with other body treatments?+
Yes. Emsculpt (abdominal muscles) can be combined with Emsella (pelvic floor) as part of a core-focused plan, and some patients pair it with a separate fat-reduction treatment such as CoolSculpting for different goals. Dr. Charles Jiang will recommend which treatments suit you, and in what order, during your consultation.
When will I see Emsculpt results?+
Changes in muscle tone are usually noticed 2 to 4 weeks after the last session, and they can keep developing for up to about 3 months. Some people feel their muscles working harder sooner. Individual results vary, and Dr. Jiang reviews your progress after the course.
Is there downtime, and what are the side effects?+
There is no downtime; most people return to work and daily activities straight after. Muscle soreness or tiredness for a day or two, like after a hard workout, is common, and some people notice mild redness in the treated area. Contact the clinic if anything feels unusual or does not settle.
Who should not have Emsculpt?+
Emsculpt is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with a pacemaker, defibrillator or other electronic implant, or metal implants in the treatment area. Hernias, recent surgery in the area, a copper IUD when the abdomen is treated, and uncontrolled medical conditions also need a physician's review first. Dr. Jiang goes through your history at the consultation.
How is Emsculpt different from CoolSculpting?+
They work on different tissue. Emsculpt uses electromagnetic energy to make the muscle contract and is used for muscle tone. CoolSculpting uses controlled cooling on pockets of fat. Neither is a weight-loss treatment. Some people use them for different goals or areas, and Dr. Jiang can explain which suits what you want to change.
