BTL Emsella®
Clinically Proven Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation. Fully Clothed.
Urinary incontinence is common — affecting an estimated 1 in 3 women over 50 — and highly treatable. BTL Emsella® uses HIFEM® (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) technology to induce the equivalent of 11,000 pelvic floor contractions in a single 28-minute session, while you remain fully clothed. Supervised by Dr. Charles Jiang, CPSBC Medical Director, at our Richmond clinic.
The Gold Standard Non-Invasive Incontinence Treatment
BTL Emsella® is an FDA cleared and Health Canada approved chair that delivers HIFEM® energy deep into the pelvic floor musculature. It triggers supramaximal muscle contractions — far beyond what voluntary exercise can achieve — to rehabilitate the neuromuscular control responsible for bladder continence. Approved for stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence in both women and men.
During a single 28-minute session, BTL Emsella® induces approximately 11,000 supramaximal contractions of the pelvic floor muscles — the equivalent of thousands of perfectly executed Kegel exercises performed at an intensity that voluntary effort cannot reach. You remain fully clothed, seated on the chair throughout. No gels, no probes, no recovery period. Clinical studies indicate that most patients report noticeable improvement beginning around sessions 2–3, with peak benefit typically observed 4–6 weeks after completing the standard 6-session course.
Fully Clothed, Zero Prep
Walk in, sit down, walk out. No undressing, no gels, no probes. Completely non-invasive and discreet from start to finish.
11,000 Kegel Equivalents per Session
HIFEM® technology forces supramaximal contractions — an intensity level the pelvic floor cannot achieve voluntarily — rebuilding muscle thickness and neuromuscular coordination.
FDA Cleared & Health Canada Approved
Cleared by the FDA and approved by Health Canada for stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence. Supervised at RAAC by Dr. Charles Jiang, CPSBC Medical Director.
Ideal Candidates

Physician-Led, Clinically Rigorous
At RAAC Richmond, pelvic floor health is treated as the legitimate medical concern it is — with the same clinical seriousness applied to any other chronic condition. Mandarin and Cantonese consultations available.
Dr. Charles Jiang, CPSBC Medical Director
Every Emsella course at RAAC is supervised by Dr. Charles Jiang, registered with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. Dr. Jiang reviews your symptom history, confirms the diagnosis, and ensures the protocol is appropriate for your specific presentation — not a generic template.
Private Suite, Complete Discretion
Treatments are conducted in a private room. You remain fully clothed throughout. We understand this is a sensitive topic — our team approaches pelvic health consultations with the same professionalism and discretion as any other medical visit.
Integrated Pelvic Health Strategy
Incontinence is rarely a single-cause problem. Dr. Jiang assesses whether hormonal factors (addressable with BHRT) are contributing, and can combine Emsella with CO2 laser vaginal rejuvenation or PRP where clinically appropriate.
Mandarin & Cantonese Consultations
Our Richmond team includes Mandarin and Cantonese-speaking staff. Discussing pelvic health concerns in your preferred language removes a significant barrier — particularly for patients who have suffered in silence.
Restoring Continence & Control
Emsella is indicated for multiple presentations of pelvic floor dysfunction, in both women and men. Clinical studies indicate improvement across the following conditions.
Stress Urinary Incontinence
Leakage triggered by physical exertion — coughing, laughing, sneezing, or exercise. The most common presentation in women, especially post-childbirth and post-menopause.
Urge & Mixed Incontinence
Sudden, difficult-to-defer urges to urinate, or a combination of urge and stress symptoms. Emsella retrains the neuromuscular pathways governing detrusor and sphincter coordination.
Post-Partum Pelvic Floor Recovery
Pregnancy and vaginal delivery stretch and weaken the levator ani and other pelvic floor structures. Emsella accelerates neuromuscular rehabilitation without requiring internal procedures.
Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence (Men)
Urinary leakage following prostate surgery is a well-documented clinical consequence. Emsella strengthens the external urethral sphincter and residual pelvic floor musculature.
Peri/Post-Menopausal Pelvic Floor Atrophy
Estrogen decline accelerates pelvic floor muscle loss. Emsella can be combined with hormonal optimization (BHRT) for a comprehensive pelvic health strategy.
Simple, Discreet & Effective
The standard course is 6 sessions over 3 weeks (twice weekly), each lasting 28 minutes. No preparation, no recovery, no downtime.
Before Your Session
No special preparation is required — you may eat and drink normally
Wear comfortable, non-metallic clothing (light workout pants or loose trousers are ideal; avoid heavy denim or clothes with metal hardware near the pelvis)
Inform our team of any implanted devices, pacemakers, or active infections before your first session
Dr. Jiang will review your symptom history and confirm your candidacy at your initial consultation
During Treatment
Medical Assessment
Dr. Charles Jiang reviews your urinary symptom history, confirms contraindications are absent, and tailors the treatment protocol to your presentation.
Sit, Fully Clothed
You sit on the BTL Emsella® chair in your own clothes. The chair is positioned to align the HIFEM® emitter with your pelvic floor — no undressing, no contact with skin.
28-Minute Session
HIFEM® energy delivers approximately 11,000 supramaximal contractions. You will feel intense pelvic floor contractions and tingling — similar to an extremely intense workout. Most patients read or use their phone during the session.
After Your Session
No downtime — return to normal activities, including work and light exercise, immediately
Some patients notice mild muscle soreness in the pelvic floor area, similar to post-workout soreness; this resolves within 24–48 hours
Clinical studies indicate most patients begin noticing improvement around sessions 2–3; peak results are typically observed 4–6 weeks after completing the full 6-session course
Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months are recommended to sustain results; Dr. Jiang will advise based on your response
**Standard protocol: 6 sessions over 3 weeks (twice weekly). Clinical studies indicate most patients report improvement; individual results vary. Emsella does not cure incontinence — it rehabilitates pelvic floor musculature. Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months are recommended.
Your Questions Answered
What does Emsella feel like? Is it painful?+
Emsella is not painful. You will feel strong, rhythmic pelvic floor contractions and tingling — similar to the sensation of an extremely intense workout, except you are simply sitting in a chair. The intensity is adjustable. Most patients read, scroll their phone, or relax during the 28-minute session. Some mild muscle soreness in the pelvic floor region may follow, similar to post-exercise soreness, and typically resolves within 24–48 hours.
How many sessions are needed?+
The standard protocol is 6 sessions scheduled twice per week for 3 consecutive weeks. Dr. Jiang will review your symptom severity at the initial consultation and may recommend a modified schedule. Maintenance sessions every 3–6 months are advised to sustain improvement.
When will I notice improvement?+
Clinical studies indicate most patients begin noticing improvement around sessions 2–3 of the course — often reporting fewer leakage episodes or improved control. Peak results are typically observed 4–6 weeks after completing the full 6-session course, as muscle hypertrophy and neuromuscular re-education continue after the final session. Individual results vary.
Do I really stay fully clothed?+
Yes. Emsella is entirely non-invasive. HIFEM® energy passes through clothing — there is no skin contact, no gels, and no internal probes. Comfortable, non-metallic clothing is recommended (light workout pants or loose trousers; avoid heavy denim or clothing with metal hardware near the pelvis).
Is Emsella appropriate for men?+
Yes. Urinary incontinence following prostate surgery (radical prostatectomy) is a well-established clinical indication for Emsella. The device strengthens the external urethral sphincter and remaining pelvic floor musculature, which is often weakened as a surgical consequence. Dr. Jiang will assess your specific post-operative history to determine protocol suitability.
