What is microneedling and how does it work?
Medical microneedling at RAAC uses a SkinPen® device with depth set for each area by a trained clinician. The clinic is in Richmond, BC and sees patients from Vancouver, Burnaby and across Greater Vancouver.
Microneedling, also called collagen induction therapy (CIT) or a microneedling facial, creates thousands of microscopic channels in the skin. This triggers a natural healing cascade, producing new collagen and elastin without heat or harsh chemicals.
Texture Refining
Smooths rough skin texture and minimizes the appearance of enlarged pores.
Scar Reduction
May help soften the look of old scar tissue, such as acne scars, as new collagen forms.
Enhanced Absorption
Creates micro-channels that allow medical-grade serums or PRP to penetrate deep into the dermis.

Which device do we use?
We use a medical-grade microneedling pen (SkinPen®) with single-use sterile cartridges and adjustable depth, for safety and consistency.
Micro-Injuries
Sterile needles create controlled micro-injuries, signaling the body to repair the site.
Stimulation
Growth factors are released, stimulating fibroblasts to create new collagen and elastin.
Regeneration
New skin cells are generated, replacing damaged tissue for a smoother surface.
Infusion
Simultaneous application of Hyaluronic Acid or PRP deeply hydrates and accelerates healing.

Which microneedling is right for you?
Medical microneedling uses sterile needles to create controlled micro-channels that stimulate collagen, and suits acne scars, enlarged pores and general texture. Sylfirm X is RF microneedling: it adds radiofrequency heat deep in the skin for tightening and lifting, which we consider for laxity or more advanced concerns. Your physician recommends one at consultation; see our Sylfirm X page and our guide 'Sylfirm X vs Microneedling' for the full comparison. Because needles pass through the skin barrier, sterility matters, so treatment belongs in a medical setting.
Strict Sterility
We use single-use, sterile cartridges and hospital-grade protocols to help reduce the risk of infection.
Customized Depth
Our technicians adjust needle depth (0.5mm - 2.5mm) based on your specific concern (e.g., deeper for scars, shallower for glow).
PRP Add-On
Adding your own Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) may support healing and collagen stimulation.
Upgrade Path
For advanced aging or laxity, we can upgrade you to Sylfirm X (RF Microneedling).
What can microneedling treat?
Microneedling is used for various skin concerns. The face is the most common area; the neck and body (for example stretch marks) can be discussed at consultation.
Acne Scars
May reduce the depth and visibility of atrophic acne scars over a series.
Large Pores
Can make skin around pores look tighter and more refined.
Fine Lines
Softens early signs of aging around eyes and mouth.
Stretch Marks
May improve the texture and color of stretch marks on the body.
Uneven Tone
May help even out tone and brighten dull skin.
Skin Rejuvenation
Overall improvement in skin texture, tone, and radiance.
Is microneedling painful, and how long is recovery?
A topical numbing cream is applied for about 30 minutes first; plan on roughly 45–60 minutes in total. Sensation is typically a vibrating, sandpaper-like feeling, though it varies from person to person. Redness, like a mild to moderate sunburn, typically settles within 24-48 hours.
Pre-Treatment Preparation
Avoid blood thinners for 7 days prior
No retinoids or exfoliants 3-5 days before
Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin
Inform doctor of any medications or allergies
Tell us about isotretinoin use, cold sores, keloid history or a tendency to bruise
During Treatment
Preparation
Cleanse skin and apply topical numbing cream for 30 minutes
Treatment
Micro-needles create controlled channels, serum is applied simultaneously
PRP Option
If chosen, your PRP is applied topically or injected into channels
Recovery
Apply soothing mask and protective sunscreen
Recovery & Results
Avoid sun exposure and use SPF 50+ daily
Gentle cleansing with fragrance-free products
No makeup for 24 hours, mineral makeup after
Avoid strenuous exercise and saunas for 48 hours
Use only the moisturizer and healing serum your clinician recommends, and hold retinoids and exfoliants until you are told they are safe to restart
**Individual results vary. A series of treatments is recommended for scarring.
Common Questions
Is microneedling painful?+
We apply a topical numbing cream for about 30 minutes before treatment. The sensation is typically a vibrating, sandpaper-like feeling rather than pain, though it varies and bonier areas can feel stronger. Tell your clinician if you are uncomfortable and the approach can be adjusted.
How many microneedling sessions will I need?+
For general rejuvenation, 3 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are commonly suggested. For acne scars or stretch marks, up to 6 sessions may be needed. Your physician sets the number after looking at the type and depth of the scarring, and occasional maintenance sessions may be suggested later. Results vary from person to person.
How long is recovery?+
You will look like you have a mild to moderate sunburn immediately after. This redness typically subsides within 24-48 hours. You can wear mineral makeup the next day, and we ask you to avoid strenuous exercise and saunas for 48 hours. Afterwards use a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser, the moisturizer your clinician recommends and daily SPF, and hold retinoids and exfoliants until told otherwise.
What is the difference between microneedling and RF microneedling (Sylfirm X)?+
Standard microneedling creates physical micro-channels to trigger collagen repair, which suits texture, pores and acne scars. RF microneedling such as Sylfirm X adds radiofrequency heat deep in the skin through the needles, which adds a tightening effect for laxity. Neither is better in general; the choice depends on your concern and skin, and your physician recommends one at consultation. See our Sylfirm X page for details.
Can I do this if I have active acne?+
Microneedling is generally not recommended over active, inflamed acne as it can spread bacteria. We recommend treating the active acne first (e.g., with chemical peels or lasers) before treating the scars.
Is microneedling worth the money?+
It can be, when your concern is one microneedling treats. It has reasonable evidence for atrophic acne scars, enlarged-looking pores and rough texture, but change is gradual, needs a series and is judged months later. It is less suited to marked sagging, where RF microneedling or other tightening options may fit better. A physician assessment before you commit helps you decide whether the likely improvement is worth it for you.
How much does microneedling cost in Richmond, BC?+
The cost depends on the area treated (face alone, or adding the neck or a body area such as stretch marks), how many sessions your concern needs and whether PRP is added. Acne scars usually need a longer course than a general refresh. A physician assesses your skin first, and you receive a quote for your plan before any treatment begins, so there is no single fixed price to publish.
Can microneedling be combined with PRP or other treatments?+
Yes. Microneedling is often paired with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or a hydrating serum to support repair. For acne scars, Dr. Charles Jiang may plan a layered protocol: a microneedling series of 3-6 sessions, PRP if suitable, PicoWay picosecond laser for leftover marks after acne, or Sylfirm X RF microneedling where laxity or deeper texture is part of the picture. Timing and order are set at your consultation.
Is RAAC convenient if I live in Vancouver or Burnaby?+
Yes. RAAC is at 5580 No. 3 Road in Richmond, BC, about a 3-minute walk from Lansdowne Station on the Canada Line, so patients from Vancouver, Burnaby and across Greater Vancouver can come by SkyTrain; building parking is via Ackroyd Road. Treatment is by appointment, and consultations can be held in English, Mandarin or Cantonese.
When will I see results from microneedling, and how long do they last?+
A glow can appear within days, and many people notice finer changes over the first 1–2 weeks. Collagen remodelling continues for months, so scar and texture improvement is usually judged a few months after a series (commonly 3–6 sessions, about 4–6 weeks apart). How long results last varies with skin, sun exposure and home care, and maintenance may be suggested. Results vary.
Is microneedling safe for darker or Asian skin tones?+
Often yes, with care. Darker and Asian skin tones carry a higher chance of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) after any procedure that causes inflammation. Microneedling uses no heat, and your physician chooses the depth for your skin, may wait if the skin is inflamed or recently sun-exposed, and asks for strict sun protection afterwards. No treatment is risk-free.
Is a home microneedling roller the same as a clinic treatment?+
No. Home rollers generally use shorter needles and cannot offer the depth control or single-use sterility of a clinic device, and reusing them can raise the risk of irritation or infection. Medical microneedling uses sterile single-use cartridges with the depth chosen for each area by a trained clinician, with numbing for comfort.
