What Kind of Scar?

How Do Scars Form?
Scars are the body's natural wound-healing response. Understanding how they form helps explain why treatment can improve their appearance but not remove them.
Collagen Overproduction
When skin is wounded, the body rushes to close it with collagen. This emergency collagen is laid down in parallel bundles instead of the basket-weave pattern of normal skin, creating visible scar tissue.
Inflammatory Response
Prolonged inflammation during healing leads to excessive scar formation. The more inflamed the wound, the more prominent the resulting scar.
Depth of Injury
Wounds that reach the dermis usually leave a scar. The deeper the injury, the more collagen is needed to repair it, and the more visible the scar tends to be.
Healing Conditions
Wound tension, infection, sun exposure during healing, and poor blood supply all contribute to worse scarring outcomes.
Genetic Predisposition
Some people are genetically prone to forming thicker, more prominent scars. Keloid formation, in particular, has a strong genetic component.
