Stretch Mark Treatment Richmond, BC

Soften the texture. Set realistic goals.

Stretch marks (striae) are scar-like lines that form when the dermis is stretched faster than it can adapt, as in pregnancy, growth spurts or weight change. They are rarely erased completely, but at RAAC in Richmond, BC, Sylfirm X Body RF microneedling, microneedling and PRP are used to improve texture and colour over several sessions. Newer red or purple marks usually respond better than older white ones.

What Do You See?

Stretch marks vary in color, texture, and age. Identifying your type helps determine the most effective treatment. Select all that apply:

Treating stretch marks while they are still red or purple generally gives better results, but mature white marks can also be improved to a degree.

The Science

Why Do Stretch Marks Form?

Stretch marks are a form of dermal scarring that happens when skin is stretched beyond what its elastic fibres can handle. Pregnancy, puberty, rapid weight change, hormones and genetics all play a part.

1

Rapid Skin Stretching

When skin is stretched faster than collagen can be produced, the dermis tears internally, creating visible scar lines on the surface.

2

Hormonal Changes

Cortisol and other hormones during pregnancy, puberty, or stress weaken elastic fibers, making the skin more vulnerable to tearing.

3

Collagen Disruption

The tearing disrupts the organized collagen network, replacing it with disorganized scar tissue that looks and feels different from surrounding skin.

4

Vascular Changes

New stretch marks appear red/purple due to damaged blood vessels. As they mature, blood supply decreases and they fade to white.

5

Genetic Predisposition

Skin elasticity is largely genetic. Some people are significantly more prone to stretch marks regardless of prevention efforts.

1

Body-Optimized RF

Our Sylfirm X Body system is calibrated for body skin, which is thicker and needs deeper energy delivery than facial skin.

2

Optional PRP

RF microneedling can be combined with PRP, which uses your own growth factors to support healing. Your physician will explain what the evidence does and does not show.

3

Below-the-Surface Approach

RF microneedling works beneath the surface, which can lower the risk of surface injury, though pigment changes are still possible in melanin-rich skin.

4

Realistic Expectations

We give an honest assessment. Stretch marks can often be improved but are rarely fully erased, and we set clear goals from the first visit.

FAQ

Stretch Mark Q&A

Rarely. Stretch marks are scars in the dermis, so treatment aims to soften their texture and colour rather than erase them. Newer red or purple marks usually respond better than older white ones, and results vary.
Often to a degree. RF microneedling and microneedling can improve the texture of mature marks over several sessions, but white marks generally change less than red or purple ones.
Sylfirm X Body plans commonly involve 3-6 sessions spaced about 4 weeks apart, sometimes combined with PRP, and microneedling courses can run up to 6 sessions. Improvement builds gradually over months, older white marks may need more sessions, and the number depends on the marks and your response.
Numbing cream is applied beforehand and most people find the sensation tolerable; the body is often less sensitive than the face. Expect redness and mild swelling for a few days, like a mild sunburn. Most people resume normal activities within a day or two.
Treatment is postponed during pregnancy. While breastfeeding, body areas away from the breasts may be treatable, but timing and suitability should be discussed with Dr. Jiang and your family doctor. Many people start once breastfeeding has finished and their weight has settled, which also makes it easier to judge the marks.
Evidence for creams and oils is limited. Keeping skin moisturized can help with dryness and itch, but no cream reliably prevents or removes stretch marks, and vitamin A (retinoid) creams are avoided in pregnancy. Clinic treatments aim to soften marks that have already formed; see our scarring page for other scar types.
They form when skin stretches faster than its supporting fibres can adapt, as in pregnancy, growth spurts, rapid weight gain or loss, or quick muscle gain. Genetics play a part, and long-term use of corticosteroid creams or tablets can contribute. Wide purple marks that appear suddenly without a clear reason should be checked by your family doctor before any cosmetic treatment.
Red, pink or purple marks are newer and still have active blood flow and healing. Over months they usually fade to white or silver lines that are flatter and thinner. Newer marks tend to respond more to treatment, while white marks mainly improve in texture rather than colour. Starting earlier, once pregnancy is over, is worth discussing at consultation.
Common areas are the abdomen, hips, thighs, buttocks, breasts and upper arms, wherever the skin has stretched. Sylfirm X Body and microneedling are planned area by area, and sensitive areas may need longer numbing time. The breasts are not treated while breastfeeding. Your plan depends on the size of each area and how the marks look.
It can be. Sylfirm X and microneedling work through fine needles and do not rely on targeting skin pigment, so they are used across skin tones, but darker skin can still develop temporary brown marks afterwards. Conservative settings, a test area if suggested, and sun protection on treated areas lower that risk. Your skin and history are reviewed first.
