ONDA PRO vs CoolSculpting: Heat or Cold for Stubborn Fat?

ONDA PRO and CoolSculpting both aim to reduce localized fullness without surgery, but they use opposite temperatures. ONDA PRO sends 2.45 GHz microwaves into subcutaneous fat and fibrous tissue, and is also used for the look of cellulite. CoolSculpting Elite cools pinchable fat so treated cells break down over the following weeks. Neither is a weight-loss treatment; the choice is made area by area at a physician assessment.

Below is a side-by-side comparison, then the questions people ask most when deciding. Prices are not covered here.

How do ONDA PRO and CoolSculpting compare at a glance?

ONDA PRO heats tissue below a cooled skin surface, while CoolSculpting cools the fat layer through a gel pad, and that one difference shapes the feel, the areas and the timeline.

How does ONDA PRO work?

ONDA PRO uses microwaves at 2.45 GHz to pass the skin's surface and release controlled heat in subcutaneous fat and fibrous tissue, while the surface stays cool.

With most energy-based devices, reaching deeper tissue means heating the skin along the way. The Coolwaves® frequency, developed by DEKA in Italy, is designed to travel past the surface instead. ONDA PRO has three handpieces that focus heat at different depths, so large body areas and smaller zones such as the area under the chin are treated with different settings. Because it also acts on the fibrous bands under the skin, it is used for the appearance of cellulite as well as for contour. Areas include the abdomen, flanks, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, inner knee, under the chin and the cheeks.

How does CoolSculpting work?

CoolSculpting cools the fat layer through an applicator so that treated fat cells, which are more sensitive to cold than the surrounding tissue, crystallize and are cleared by the body over the following weeks.

The Elite system uses a dual applicator and a protective gel pad, and you can read or rest during each cycle. CoolSculpting works by cooling fat cells in the treated area, and individual results vary. The treated cells are processed gradually, and the fat cells that remain can still grow with weight gain, so a stable weight matters. Common areas are the under-chin, abdomen, flanks, upper arms and thighs.

Which one suits cellulite, and which suits a pinchable bulge?

As a rule of thumb, cellulite and firmer, fibrous fullness lean toward ONDA PRO, while a soft, pinchable pocket on someone near their goal weight is the classic CoolSculpting case.

Real bodies rarely sort that neatly. A post-pregnancy abdomen may combine laxity, fullness and a fibrous feel; an outer thigh may have both a pinchable pocket and dimpling. That is why we decide by area: one zone may suit heat and another may suit cold. CoolSculpting needs tissue that fits the applicator, so very firm or very thin areas may not be a match. Where loose skin is the main concern, neither device alone addresses it well, and skin-tightening options come into the discussion.

What does each session feel like?

ONDA PRO feels warm and is usually compared to a hot stone massage, while CoolSculpting starts with strong cold that numbs the area within minutes.

During ONDA PRO, warmth builds below the skin and radiates upward as the handpiece glides, and energy is adjusted to your feedback. The treated area is massaged before you leave. With CoolSculpting, the cold sensation fades as the area numbs; the massage right after a cycle can bring brief tingling or stinging. Neither treatment uses needles or anesthesia.

How soon do results show, and how many sessions are typical?

Both work gradually: ONDA PRO plans usually run 2 to 3 sessions about 3 to 5 weeks apart, and CoolSculpting changes tend to appear from about 3 weeks and continue over 1 to 3 months.

Some people notice a change after one ONDA PRO session, and maintenance sessions are suggested once the series is complete. With CoolSculpting, many people see a change after one treatment, and a second session may be suggested depending on the amount of fat in the area.

What are the common reactions and recovery?

Most people resume normal activities the same day after either treatment; temporary warmth, redness, numbness, tenderness, swelling or bruising are possible.

After ONDA PRO, keep drinking water, massage the area as directed, avoid strenuous exercise for at least 48 hours (walking is fine), skip alcohol for 3 to 4 days and protect the area from sun. After CoolSculpting, avoid intense exercise, saunas and hot tubs for 24 hours, and plan around events, since mild swelling or bruising can last up to about two weeks. Contact the clinic if anything seems unusual.

Who should not have either treatment?

Pregnancy and breastfeeding rule out both, and each device has its own list of conditions that need a physician's review.

  • ONDA PRO is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding (including up to 10 months after delivery), with a heart condition, pacemaker, defibrillator or other electronic implant, cancer in the past 5 years, severe vascular disease or a clotting disorder, a hernia, metal implant, open wound or infection in the area, kidney or liver dysfunction, or uncontrolled diabetes.
  • CoolSculpting is not used during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or with open wounds, infection or a hernia in the treatment zone. It is also a poor fit where loose, sagging skin is the main concern.

Can they be combined?

Yes, in some plans the two are used on different areas, or one is followed by another body treatment, with timing set by your physician.

A plan might use CoolSculpting on a pinchable lower abdomen and ONDA PRO on thigh cellulite. Either can also be sequenced with muscle-building or skin-tightening treatments when that matches your goals. More treatments do not always mean a better outcome.

How is the choice made at RAAC?

At RAAC in Richmond, BC, the choice is made area by area at a physician assessment led by Dr. Charles Jiang's medical team.

The assessment looks at whether fullness is under the skin or deeper inside the abdomen, the grade of any cellulite, skin laxity, how pinchable the tissue is, firmness or tenderness on palpation, and your medical history. We take standardized before photos and record weight and circumference so progress is measured rather than guessed. Consultations are available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese at Unit 110, 5580 No. 3 Rd, about a 3-minute walk from Lansdowne Station on the Canada Line, open every day from 9:00 to 18:00. Your plan and quote are given after the assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Is ONDA PRO or CoolSculpting a weight-loss treatment?

No. Both are used to contour specific areas, and both suit people at a stable weight who want to address particular zones rather than lose overall weight.

Can both treat a double chin?

Both can be used under the chin. ONDA PRO has a dedicated handpiece for smaller areas and can include the cheeks; CoolSculpting uses an applicator sized for the submental area. Which suits you depends on the tissue and your profile.

Does the change last?

CoolSculpting is designed to reduce fat cells in the treated area, but the remaining cells can still grow with weight gain. After ONDA PRO, maintenance sessions are suggested once the series is complete. In both cases, weight and lifestyle affect how the result holds.

Which is more comfortable?

It varies. Many people find ONDA PRO's warmth relaxing, while CoolSculpting's cold is strongest in the first minutes before the area numbs. Energy and comfort are adjusted during treatment.

Can I go back to work the same day?

Most people do. Plan around events after CoolSculpting in case of swelling or bruising, and avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours after ONDA PRO.

What should I bring to the assessment?

A list of medications, recent surgeries and any fillers or implants in the area.
