V Carbon and a DPL photo facial both brighten the skin, but they target different things. V Carbon is a non-laser carbon peel that uses activated carbon with mandelic, ferulic and citric acids to clean pores and refresh dull, oily skin. A DPL photo facial uses filtered 500 to 600 nm light to target redness, sun spots and uneven tone. Your main concern and a skin assessment decide the order.
Below is a side-by-side comparison, then the questions people ask most when choosing between them. Prices are not published online at the moment; please contact the clinic.
How do V Carbon and DPL compare at a glance?
V Carbon works chemically on the skin surface and pores, while DPL works with light that is absorbed by pigment and visible blood vessels, so one leans toward congestion and dullness and the other toward spots and redness.
| V Carbon | DPL photo facial | |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanism | A film of activated vegetable carbon with mandelic, ferulic and citric acids, activated by a spray; no laser energy | Dynamic Pulsed Light, a refined form of IPL, filtered to a 500 to 600 nm band absorbed by melanin and oxyhemoglobin |
| What it targets | Enlarged or congested pores, oiliness, dullness, uneven texture, early fine lines | Facial redness and flushing, broken capillaries, sun spots, freckles, uneven tone |
| Depth / layer | A superficial to medium-depth peel | Pigment and visible blood vessels in the skin, with a thermal effect that also supports collagen |
| Typical session feel | Slight warmth or mild tingling when the spray is applied; 15 to 20 minutes | Warm pulses as a cooled handpiece slides over the skin |
| How results develop | A fresher look after one session; a series of 4 to 6, 2 to 4 weeks apart, for longer-lasting change | Tone often looks brighter soon after; spots fade gradually over the following weeks; usually 3 to 6 sessions, 3 to 4 weeks apart |
| Common reactions | Redness that usually fades in 1 to 2 hours; mild flaking for 2 to 3 days if any | Pinkness for 1 to 2 hours, like a mild sunburn |
| Who it may not suit | Active infection or open wounds, allergy to any ingredient, extremely sensitive or inflamed skin | Pregnancy or breastfeeding, active infection, recent sun exposure, photosensitivity, certain medical conditions |
How does V Carbon work?
V Carbon is a carbon peel: activated vegetable carbon draws oil and debris from the pores while an acid complex loosens dead cells and brightens the surface, all without laser heat.
Made in Italy by Promoitalia, it is applied as a film, activated with a spray that controls the depth of the peel, then removed and neutralized after 5 to 10 minutes. It aims for the brightening, pore-cleansing look people associate with a "Hollywood peel", but it is not the laser "Black Face Doll" treatment, which heats carbon particles with a laser. Without laser heat it avoids laser-related burns, and the peel depth is set conservatively for skin prone to pigmentation.
How does a DPL photo facial work?
DPL concentrates intense pulsed light into a narrow 500 to 600 nm band that is absorbed by pigment and by the haemoglobin in visible vessels, aiming to treat them while limiting the effect on surrounding skin.
Compared with older IPL, the narrower spectrum filters out stray light that can increase heat scatter, which allows more controlled treatment of melanin-rich or PIH-prone skin with careful settings. A sliding technique spreads energy evenly and helps avoid striped marks, and cooled sapphire tips protect the surface. Dark spots tend to look darker for a short time before fading, as treated pigment comes to the surface.
Which concerns lean toward V Carbon, and which toward DPL?
Oily, congested skin with visible pores and a dull look leans toward V Carbon, while redness, broken capillaries, sun spots and freckles lean toward DPL.
If you want a fresher complexion before an event, V Carbon is often the simpler choice. If your concern is uneven colour, such as flushing across the cheeks and nose or scattered sun spots, DPL addresses it more directly. Stubborn or deeper pigment, and melasma, need a physician's assessment, as they may call for a different approach such as PicoWay.
What does each treatment feel like?
V Carbon feels like slight warmth or tingling when the spray is applied, and DPL feels like warm pulses as the handpiece slides over the skin.
Older IPL is often described as a hot rubber band snapping against the skin. DPL's sliding technique uses lower energy per pulse, which most people describe as warm and tolerable. Protective eyewear is worn for DPL.
How soon do results show, and how many sessions are typical?
Both can give a visible lift in brightness after one session, but lasting change usually takes a series: about 4 to 6 V Carbon sessions, or 3 to 6 DPL sessions.
V Carbon sessions are usually 2 to 4 weeks apart, with optional monthly maintenance. DPL sessions are usually 3 to 4 weeks apart. Results vary from person to person, and daily sun protection helps keep them.
What are the common reactions and recovery?
Most people return to work and wear makeup the same day after either treatment; temporary redness or pinkness is common and usually fades within hours.
After V Carbon, avoid heavy makeup for 24 hours if possible, use gentle hydrating skincare for a few days and apply SPF 30+ daily, as any light flaking settles within 2 to 3 days. After DPL, apply SPF 30+ straight away and every day, avoid sun exposure, use gentle skincare for 24 to 48 hours, and skip hot showers, saunas and strenuous exercise for 24 hours. Contact the clinic if anything seems unusual.
Who should not have either treatment?
Active infection or open wounds rule out both, and each has its own cautions.
- V Carbon is not suitable with a known allergy to any of its ingredients, or with extremely sensitive or inflamed skin.
- DPL is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, after recent sun exposure, with photosensitivity, or with certain medical conditions your physician will review.
Can they be combined?
They can sit in the same skin plan on separate visits, with spacing set by your physician, because one addresses pores and dullness and the other colour and redness.
V Carbon is often paired with LED therapy, HydraFacial or microneedling. DPL is often combined with PicoWay for a "pigment and redness" plan, and Sylfirm X may be added for pores and collagen support. Which order makes sense depends on your skin and how sensitive it is.
How is the choice made at RAAC?
At RAAC in Richmond, BC, Dr. Charles Jiang's team assesses your skin type, sensitivity and main concern before recommending a peel, light treatment or a layered plan.
Darker and Asian skin tones are assessed carefully, energy and peel depth are set conservatively when the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is higher, and a test area may be suggested for DPL. RAAC uses genuine Promoitalia products. Consultations are available in English, Mandarin and Cantonese at Unit 110, 5580 No. 3 Rd, about a 3-minute walk from Lansdowne Station on the Canada Line, open every day from 9:00 to 18:00.
Frequently asked questions
Is V Carbon the same as a laser carbon peel?
No. The laser "Black Face Doll" uses a laser to heat carbon on the skin. V Carbon is a chemical peel system with no laser energy.
Is DPL the same as IPL?
DPL is a refined type of IPL. It filters light into a narrower 500 to 600 nm band absorbed by redness and pigment, with less stray light.
Which is better for redness?
DPL, because its light is absorbed by the haemoglobin in visible vessels. V Carbon is aimed at pores, oil and dullness rather than redness.
Which suits oily, acne-prone skin?
V Carbon is more often used for oily, congested skin and can support acne-prone skin as part of a wider plan. Active or painful breakouts need a physician's review.
Are they suitable for Asian or darker skin?
Both can be, with care. V Carbon has no laser heat and its depth is adjusted conservatively; DPL's filtered spectrum allows more controlled settings, and a test area may be done first.
Can I have one before an event?
V Carbon is often booked for a fresher look before an event. DPL spots can look darker for a short time before fading, so leave more time before an important date.
